Svaroopa® is a therapeutic approach to yoga that emphasizes releasing tensions stored in the deepest layers of the body, beginning at the base of the spine. Developed by Rama Berch in the 1980s, Svaroopa® yoga focuses on aligning the spine from the base up in every class. This allows the bones to move to their proper positions, resulting in decompression of the nervous system which brings a sense of ease and calmness. This unique approach uses multiple props such as blankets, bolsters, straps and blocks that support the body in static poses that are comfortable, not strained. The Svaroopa® approach is different from traditional yoga practices that aim to build strength and flexibility. Instead, the focus is on releasing deep tensions in the body’s core muscles, which can cause chronic pain, stiffness, and fatigue. By starting at the tailbone and progressing up the spine, Svaroopa® yoga helps students gradually release tensions in their body, creating ease, suppleness and expansion.
In each class, we help switch your nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic, allowing your body to slow down and repair from the inside out. This class is appropriate for all, including those with health challenges, high stress levels, or injuries, and no experience is necessary.
